Rose St, Fitzroy

Situated on the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation, Rose Street converts a former brothel in the backstreets of Fitzroy, Melbourne, into a custom residence and outbuilding. The design refurbishes the existing terrace and adds a new dwelling to the rear connected by a central shared bluestone and timber deck courtyard.

With our design for Rose Street, we honour rather than erase the site’s colourful past. Cues were taken from its existing materiality and colour schemes in a playful update in which a touch of the Dionysian spirit is alive and well: salvaged red neon and custom pink LED lights, bespoke leather and velvet furniture, herringbone floorboards, textured tiling with brass and pink colour accents. This is a space focused on detail, surprise and tactility – and the junctures between the old world and new, Apollo and Dionysus.
